The Deftones are a unique band, almost defining their own style of heavy metal. They began their career in the early 90’s categorized as a “Nu Metal” rap-rock-D-tuned act, but quickly transcended that labeling blending melody, atmosphere and experimentation into their music. Due to the varying musical influences of the band, and range of vocal styling from their singer Chino Moreno, they take songs into complex soundscapes while still remaining heavy and melodic.
The track illustrated here is titled Risk and it has swagger. It mixes a bold rhythmic attack on guitar while lyrically describing a beautiful love story. Chino admits to writing somewhat vague lyrics, but this album was written as a “positive zest for life” after the band tragically lost their bass player. It’s optimistic and dark, but swirling around in the sound is hope and love.
What’s the risk involved with love?
You can’t talk.I’m anxious.
I’m off the walls, I’m right here just
Come outside and see it.
But pack your heart,
you might need it.
[Chorus:]
I’ll find a way
I’ll confuse them
But I think I can try
I will save your life
I will save your life
I’ll try for you
You’re locked up. You exhaled.
You did it before, I seen it.
Come outside and breath in.
Relax your arms,
and let me in
[Chorus]
I know what to say to take you
Higher, higher.
No one else can take you higher.
But I will try.
[Chorus 2x]
For you
