Kylesa has been in heavy rotation the last couple years, being one of my favorite “newer ” bands. I remember their 2009 release “Static Tensions” being a landmark album and they stuck with me. The Savannah quintet is unique having many singers (male and female), two guitar players, a basest, and two drummers—not a typical lineup in the metal scene.
Their sound is heavy and raw, incorporating psychedelic stoner rock, doom metal, technical speed metal, and good old-fashioned Black Sabbath sludgy metal. But there’s more. They balance and contrast between male and female clean and gruff vocals, making Kylesa dynamic and memorable.
This jump between heavy singing and brutal riffs can then fade into a beautiful and melodic song. The track featured here, “We’re Taking This” hits hard! The message of the underdog biting back resonates with me. What goes around, comes back around.
What knowledge do you hold
that hasn’t been bought or sold?
Trick tip to the times ahead
Influence is limited
Pushed down and beaten
The underdog bites back
Can’t draw a straight line
With a shaking hand
Filling up space
With a sharpened edge
Watch from the sidelines
Then walk away
Say fuck it all
Then walk away
What goes around comes back around
Herds of sheep are crowding around
False prophet’s repeating sound
We play this how we want
To your bullshit juggernaut
Can’t draw a straight line
With a shaking hand
Filling up space
With a sharpened edge
Watch from the sidelines
Then walk away
Say fuck it all
Then walk away
What goes around comes back around
