Not Falling

MUDVAYNE
Mudvayne: Not Falling

About This Project

Although Mudvayne started in the scene looking like another one of those Slipknot rip-off bands, there was more to them that meets the eye. The early 2000’s had plenty of the “horror make-up wearing” bands so they they abandoned the costumes and gimmicks to focus on performance. Unfortunately, the band is on extended hiatus now while members are playing in various other bands, none as good as this one.

I believe they were one of the more technically proficient bands of the Nu Metal era sampling inspiration from extreme metal, alternative metal, math metal, nu metal, death metal, and progressive rock. They found the recipe for rock radio hits while still remaining heavy. Chad Grey, their dynamic singer, belted out intense guttural screams (some sounding somewhat painful) but also at times, very beautiful harmonious singing. They also have a tremendous bass player in Ryan Martinie; watch them live to see more of him.

Not Falling is a reoccurring theme in metal, but a valid one. It’s not how many times you fall down, it’s how many times you stand back up. Or as paraphrased in the video below, “knock me down, that’s the last time you will.” You got to love the determination and will to fight. Even though I’m glad they removed themselves from the shock-rock-horror visuals, a classic horror poster of a Dracula seemed to compliment them and this track nicely.

More about the song via Last.fm:

Unknown to most casual listeners, “The End of All Things to Come” is a concept album. Inside the CD booklet, a symbol of the Zodiac is placed next to each song of the album, with the lyrics for each song matching up to the expected personality of the corresponding Zodiac symbol. The Zodiac signs and their corresponding songs are shown below:

Aries – “The End of All Things to Come”
Taurus – “Trapped in the Wake of a Dream”
Gemini – “Shadow of a Man”
Cancer – “World So Cold”
Leo – “Not Falling”
Virgo – “The Patient Mental”
Libra – “Silenced”
Scorpio – “Skrying”
Sagittarius – “Solve et Coagula”
Capricorn – “(Per)version of a Truth”

LYRICS /

Always known in all my time, a little left of center now.
Reflect as I realize that all I need
Is to find a little bit about to sit like the sun like a star in the sky and just be.
Sinners, casting stones at me!

I, I stand- not crawling, not falling down! I, I bleed- the demons that drag me down!
I, I stand (for nothing)! Not crawling (the center), not falling down! (Of calms within the eye!)
I, I’ll bleed (for no one)! The demons (but myself) that pull me down…
For me and no one else.

Goodbye sunshine, I’ve put it out again, SAD!
I’m over, personalities conflicting, I don’t need you or anyone but me.
I’ll just be living my own life. I feel my glowing center grow.
Infecting, I feel alive and sharper, turn on the lime.
Plant it in myself to sit like a seed under covers of earth and just be.
Sinners, point your fingers at me!

I, I stand- not crawling, not fallings down! I, I bleed – the demons that drag me down!
I, I stand (for nothing)! Not crawling (the center), not falling down! (Of calms within the eye!)
I, I’ll bleed (for no one)! The demons (but myself) that pull me down…
For me and no one else.

Come play kill. Refuse my body, refuse my shadow!
Stone cold will. Refuse to lead this, refuse to follow!
Bitter pills – refuse to feed this, refuse to swallow, I’m fueled godless!
Come play, come play kill. Just be.
