What defines “heavy”? I believe it’s more than just overly distorted guitars or even screaming. It’s attitude. It’s persona. It’s the depth of the song and the music. Parsonz Curse, the first track on Royal Thunder’s 2009 album CVI is super heavy. They take a page right out of the gospel of Black Sabbath with a sludging riff and haunting vocals by their singer Miny Parsonz. This band blends so many styles: from 1970’s blues, stoner rock/metal and doom to psychedelic space-rock and old school heavy metal. It’s awesome to hear something so old yet so new.

Even NPR noticed them.

Visually, I wanted to make something bold as a tribute poster for this song. The song is slow and powerful: I began thinking about royal and royalty, derived from the name of the band. A lion came to mind as a creature that would compliment the attitude of this song. But that wasn’t enough. A Griffin—the mythical creature that’s half lion and half eagle—blends the mystic and darkness for this track.
