In Regards to Myself

UNDERØATH
Underoath: In Regards To Myself

About This Project

Take a ton of screaming and a ton of melody, add heavy-ass guitars, keyboard programming, and unique songwriting and you get Underøath. They truly are a brilliant band that blends metalcore, screamo, post-punk, hardcore, and metal. Did I mention screamo?

In Regards to Myself is the opening track on their album Define The Great Line. And I must say it’s a hell of a song off a superb album. This track very personal, almost like reading like a diary entry about a person yelling at himself (or herself) to get them to “wake up” and take charge. “Pull yourself together, man! What are you so afraid of?!” This is the shot in the arm we all need now and then.

Another reason this song is so great: it doesn’t have the typical verse–chorus–verse structure. There isn’t a proper chorus and the title isn’t mentioned, although I found it hidden in characters in the words, did you notice? Unlike many posters for Metal Motivation Monday, I wanted to showcase all these lyrics as a design element. I wanted to pick up on the subtleties in the lyrics and create a narrative from them in the poster.

LYRICS /

Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!
This is not a test!
And it’s not too late to come clean
Get it off your chest
So steady your hand before your face and concentrate
There’s got to be some stable ground
Left to walk on

So tear another page from the book
Are you asleep or just alone?
Clear this room from your lungs

Pull yourself together
Pull yourself together, man!
Pull yourself together
Pull yourself together

On your back,
You’re sleeping in a bed of shame
Let the light breath some new life into this room
It’s what keeps you coming back
Made up of insatiable songs
Bury your head in your hands
And sing to yourself

Oh!

Just what are you so afraid of?
What are you so afraid of?
You’re staring truth in the face
So come on down
What are you so afraid of?

You’re busy living now, aren’t you?
You’re busy making vows
You’re coming unglued

Time is shorter than you know
I know the light is blinding to the naked eye
So why don’t you take steps away from being alone?
I swear, it’s not too late for you

It’s all worth reaching for
It’s all worth reaching for
It’s all worth reaching for
The hand to pull you out
It’s all worth reaching for
The hand to pull you out

Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!
And step outside your box
Wake up! Wake up!
