Bury Me In Smoke

DOWN: Bury Me In Smoke

About This Project

NOLA by Down is an album I’ve been obsessed with since I first got it in 1995. Phil Anselmo, Pepper Keenan, Kirk Windstein, Jimmy Bower, and Rex Brown made something special on this album. It’s still in my essential albums list. Somehow, it transcends what both (main) bands were doing at the time with Pantera and Corrosion of Conformity. This album makes no apologies for its many references of smoking the green stuff — queue the water bong-riff in Hail the Leaf (fitting right?) — to this track. It’s bluesy southern rock, heavy metal, doom metal, stoner rock, and groove metal wrapped up in a tasty tribute to the south, specifically New Orleans, LA.

The entire album is tops from the heaviest of the heavy to the most chill song ever (outside maybe Planet Caravan) in Jail, but the juggernaut swan song is Bury Me In Smoke. It’s a down-tempo, chug-heavy, riff monster of a song. Interpetting the lyrics for myself, I understand it to mean that there are no regrets. Take me for what I am; nothing is perfect; live for tomorrow because you can’t change what happened yesterday.

LYRICS /

Windows are closing to keep me locked away
No chance was given to find myself today…

My time of aging wonder when I’ll die
But when my time will come I know the reason why!

I have an escape, alone it keeps me safe within my home
I have a reason to keep me satisfied until I’m gone

Don’t regret the rules I broke
When I die bury me in smoke

Under the world I wait for my fate
My soul is resting beneath my blissful haze

My time of aging wonder when I’ll die
But when my time will come, I know the reason why

I have an escape, alone it keeps me safe within my home
I have a reason to keep me satisfied until I’m gone

Don’t regret the rules I broke
When I die bury me in smoke
