This week is channeling the summer weather and the awesome vibes from the desert/stoner band Kyuss. They were a legendary band [1987 – 1995] and “Blues For The Red Sun” was their magnum opus, laying the foundation for the stoner rock/metal genré. I first saw the video for “Green Machine” on Headbangers Ball around ’92 or ’93 and can remember it blowing me away. Never before did I hear so much bass and raw sound from a guitar—they say Josh Homme played guitar out of bass cabinets which crafted his heavy sound. And it was complimented by gruff yet melodic vocals and ferocious drums. I was hooked.
I consider this album in my essential top 20 albums (if I were on a desert island…), and this song, “50 Million Year Trip (Downside Up)”, is just amazing. I dare say it’s “stoner-hardcore” near the beginning with the epic breakdowns, but then it changes and the second half of the track becomes a trippy jam. This is just heavy and amazing. Period.
After the break up in 1995, members left to join many other successful bands including Queens of the Stone Age, Fu Machu, Dwarves, Eagles of Death Metal, Mondo Generator, Hermano, Unida, Slo Burn, Them Crooked Vultures, Vista Chino, and the solo career of Brant Bjork.
I am dreaming
I am rolling
(You can’t stop me)
I am hiding
I am running
(You can’t stop me)
But I’ll never forget you in any way
But I’ll never forget you in any way
But I’ll never forget you in any way
But I’ll never forget you
I am dreaming
I am rolling
(You can’t stop me)
I am running
I am rolling
(You can’t stop me)
But I’ll never forget you in any way
But I’ll never forget you in any way
But I’ll never forget you in any way
But I’ll never forget you
Soon I came to realize
as this world began to turn
That never could I stand here and return
No fool for you, in this I am
Under the corner of your mouth (your mouth)
Fight this fear
Fight this fear
